Where should free delivery start?

Test up to three free-delivery thresholds against a percentage discount. For each, see how many orders qualify, what it costs you, how much extra revenue you would need to cover it, and the top-up spend it might prompt.

What it is

What it is, and how it works.

A free calculator that compares free-delivery thresholds with a percentage discount, and shows the cost, break-even revenue and modelled top-up spend for each, from your own figures.

Set the free-delivery threshold too low and you pay for delivery on orders that would have come anyway. Set it too high and nobody reaches it. This calculator tests up to three thresholds against your own numbers.

You enter your average order value, gross margin, what delivery costs you and what you charge for it, your monthly orders, and up to three thresholds. For each threshold you say what share of orders are already above it and what share of the rest you expect to top up to reach it. You can also set a percentage discount to compare against.

For each threshold the calculator works out the qualifying orders (those already above it plus those that top up), the cost of giving them free delivery, the cost of the comparison discount on the same orders, the revenue you would need at your margin to break even, and the extra revenue from customers topping up their baskets.

It is a model of your assumptions, with one simplification printed on the page: the comparison discount is costed at your average order value, which probably understates its true cost on larger baskets. Everything runs in your browser. Your figures are not sent to us.

Who it is for

  • Online stores setting or reviewing a free-delivery threshold
  • Owners choosing between free delivery and a discount
  • Anyone whose delivery costs have changed
What it does

What it reads, and what you see.

Threshold by threshold

Up to three thresholds, each with its own qualifying share and top-up rate.

Against a discount

Each threshold compared with a percentage discount on the same orders.

Break-even and top-up

The revenue needed to cover the cost, and the modelled extra spend.

By hand, or with it

The same job, two ways.

By hand

  • Copy a rival's threshold
  • Forget that free delivery is paid on orders already above it
  • Not compare it with a simple discount
  • No idea what top-up spend would cover it

With Delivery threshold calculator

  • Each threshold costed from your figures
  • Compared with a discount
  • Break-even revenue shown
  • Top-up spend modelled
What you walk away with

What you keep.

A cost per threshold

What free delivery costs at each threshold, per month.

A comparison

Free delivery against a discount on the same orders.

A break-even figure

The extra revenue each option needs at your margin.

A top-up estimate

The extra spend from customers reaching the threshold.

How it works

Three steps.

  1. Enter your figures

Order value, margin, delivery cost and charge, and orders.

  2. Set your thresholds

Up to three, with the share above each and the expected top-up.

  3. Compare

Cost, break-even and top-up for each, against a discount.

Limits

What it does not do.

  • The share of orders above each threshold and the top-up rate are your assumptions.
  • The comparison discount is costed at average order value, which likely understates it on bigger baskets.
  • It does not model delivery speed, carrier choice or returns.
  • It does not read your store's real order data.

FAQ

Delivery threshold calculator: questions

Where do I find the share of orders above a threshold?

Your store's order reports, grouped by basket value. A rough figure is fine to start; the comparison is what matters.

What does top-up mean?

Customers adding to their basket to reach the threshold. The calculator models the extra revenue from those top-ups.

Is free delivery always better than a discount?

No. It depends on your delivery cost, margin and order values. The comparison shows which wins at yours.

Do you see my figures?

No. It runs in your browser and sends nothing to us.
