Two leaders, two kinds of moat
Ask “who leads UK cut-to-size?” and you expect one name. The data gives two — and the gap between them is the most important thing in this report.
Cut My(cutmy.co.uk) is the category leader. At roughly a quarter of a million visits a month it pulls four to five times the traffic of any rival, carries ~21,000 Trustpilot reviews, and — the decisive fact — it no longer sells one material. It began in 2016 as Cut My Plastic and in 2023 quietly dropped the word “Plastic.” It now cuts plastic, wood, MFC, panelling and doors through a single configurator.5 It is not winning a slice; it is annexing the category.
metals4U(metals4u.co.uk) is the other kind of leader: the deepest single-vertical incumbent in the field. Over 24 years it has built ~28,000 reviews — the largest verified review base of anycut-to-size seller in the UK — on an organic-led footing, with self-service instant cutting and no minimum order.2 It is everything a defensible specialist should be. And it does not sell plastic, wood or glass.
One leader is going a mile deep in a single material. The other is going a mile wide across all of them. Only one of those moats protects you from the other.— The structural question of the vertical
That asymmetry is the whole story. metals4U’s depth is a wall against other metal sellers — but it is no defence at all against a horizontal brand that decides, one Tuesday, to add “cut my metal” to a configurator that already ranks for everything else. Every specialist in this report — plastic, wood, metal, glass — is defending a single slice against a competitor whose entire strategy is to stop slices existing.
The field, ranked
The highest-signal players across all four materials, ranked by monthly traffic. Note that the column that actually predicts durability is not traffic — it is the review base, and the configurator.12

| 10 | Aluminium Warehousealuminiumwarehouse.co.uk | Metal | 18k | 1,579 | 4.8 | Medium |
Two things jump out. First, the drop after Cut My is a cliff, not a slope: from ~250k to ~75k to a long tail. Second, the players with the strongest scores (The Plastic People at 4.9, Aluminium Warehouse and MDF Direct at 4.8) are not the players with the most traffic— reputation and reach have come apart, and the leaders win by holding both at once.
Why the leader leads
The leaders in every slice share the same five mechanics. None of them is the cutting itself — which, as we will see, is the most counter-intuitive finding in the report.
01
Configurator-as-product
The product isn't the sheet — it's the instant online price. Enter dimensions, drilling, cutouts, edging; see the cost before checkout; no quote, no phone call, no waiting. Every leader has this. Every laggard makes you ask.
02
A review-velocity moat
21,000 (Cut My) and 28,000 (metals4U) Trustpilot reviews are not marketing — they are accumulated transaction volume that compounds in Google Shopping and branded search, and cannot be bought or faked at speed. This is the single hardest thing for a challenger to replicate.
03
A dual acquisition engine
Years of compounding SEO authority on 'X cut to size' terms, layered with aggressive paid search. The leaders own the organic ground and rent more on top; the fragile players (woodsheets, K I Metals, The Metal Store) rent all of it.
04
Horizontal breadth (the Cut My move)
One configurator, many materials. Going from plastic to wood to panels to doors multiplies the addressable keyword set, the cross-sell, and the brand's claim on the whole 'cut my anything' category — while specialists defend a single slice.
05
Industrialised throughput
530k+ orders, 2.4M pieces cut, 100+ staff (Cut My); no-MOQ free cutting at scale (metals4U). The configurator only converts if the factory behind it can deliver in 2–5 days, every time.
The cutting doesn’t win the market
If cut-to-size were won on cutting, Cutwrights would lead it. Their online quote tool is the most advanced in the field by a distance: 14+ edge-banding types, up to sixteen CNC drilling parameters per order, German Homag edgebanders, 0.1mm tolerance.6 The UK trade knows them.
They draw roughly 2,000 visits a month and have no meaningful Trustpilot presence at all. The best saw in the market is nearly invisible to the buyer who finds suppliers through Google. That is the lesson in one company: this vertical is won on distribution and the buying experience, not on the quality of the cut. The cut is table stakes. The configurator, the reviews, and the SEO are the business.
Two things the league table hides
Phantom consolidation
One £156M group, four rival brands
Vink UK (turnover ~£156M, 462 staff) quietly owns Sheet Plastics, Bay Plastics, PlasticStockist andVink Plastics — brands that bid against each other on Google while sharing one balance sheet.34 The plastic slice looks fragmented and is, in capital terms, already partly consolidated. Anyone competing with one of those names is competing with all of them.
Bought visibility, borrowed trust
The fragile leaders run on ad spend
woodsheets.com pulls ~19k visits a month on a 2.3-starTrustpilot rating — about half its reviews are one-star — with traffic propped up by paid search.12 The Metal Store routes buyers to Google (2,300+ 5★) to keep its thin Trustpilot (3.7) out of the frame. Visibility without trust is a position you can lose in a quarter.
The four markets, side by side
Each material is its own contest with its own leader. Cut My wins plastic and wood outright; metal and glass remain specialist strongholds — for now.

If you sell cut-to-size, read this twice
Everything above was assembled from public signals — traffic, reviews, filings, configurator behaviour — without a single conversation with any of these businesses. It is the outside view of your market. There is an inside view, and it is sharper.
For one business in this report, we can run the full Audience Intel analysis: where you actually rank against the named leaders, which buyer archetypes choose them over you and in what words, the precise configurator and credibility gaps costing you orders, and the shortest path to closing them. The same lens we pointed at the whole vertical, pointed at you.
We profile one vertical at a time. This one is open. It closes the day three businesses in it become clients — and then we build it for whoever they compete with next.— How this report closes
That is not a sales tactic; it is how the work compounds. The first three firms in a vertical to see the inside view get to act on it before their competitors know it exists. Once three have signed, the report comes down and the advantage is theirs. The fourth enquiry hears that the seats are gone.
